Car Window Tinting Laws

The window tinting laws that apply in New York were created in 1991 and updated in 2017. In this article, we are giving consumers the information that they need before having their car or truck windows tinted in the state of New York. This information includes how dark and how reflective the tint can be. In addition to these aspects of tinting, we offer additional tinting rules and regulations that apply to drivers with their vehicles registered in the state of New York.

How Dark Can My Tint Be?

Visible Light Transmission (VLT) is the amount of visible light that is allowed to come through your vehicle windows. The percentage of light that can come through the film or glass is very specific in New York and varies depending on the type of vehicle it is.

The Legal % of Tint for Sedans, SUV's, and Vans:

  1. Front driver and passenger side doors: the window tint must allow a minimum of 70% of light to shine through.
  2. Back driver and passenger side doors: the window tint must allow a minimum of 70% of light to shine through.
  3. Front Windshield: the window tint must allow a minimum of 70% of light to shine through (an exception to this rule is any shade of tint is allowed only on top 6 inches).
  4. Rear Windshield: any shade of tint is allowed, only if the vehicle has both exterior rearview mirrors on each side.

Exemptions to New York State Window Tint Laws:

Starting December 2017, if you have a medical condition that requires you to limit the exposure of light you receive, you can get your vehicle tinted in any shade level of tint. To get this exemption you have to be diagnosed by a medical physician with any of the following medical conditions:

  • lupus
  • albinism
  • dermatomycosis
  • porphyria
  • severed photosensitivity to medication or treatment
  • chronic actinic
  • xeroderma pigmentosa
  • or any other condition that causes severe photosensitivity

If you have been diagnosed with any of the conditions above, you then must go onto the New York Department of Motor Vehicles website and complete the application for Tinted Windows Exemption. At Window Tinting Brooklyn, we are proud to offer a premium line of automotive tint that is specifically approved for the window tint exemption rule.

Is Reflective Window Tint Allowed For Vehicles?

A vehicle's window tint can reflect incoming light and minimize the glare and amount of heat. New York window tint law allows for a certain amount of window reflection when tint is installed. This should be paid strict attention to. Both the front and rear windshield, as well as the front and back driver and passenger side windows are prohibited to have a mirrored or metallic appearance. Our premium car tint already blocks a certain percentage of glare, heat, and ultra-violet rays.

Window tinting laws, in New York aim to prioritize safety and privacy for homeowners and vehicle owners while ensuring compliance with regulations. Below you'll find an overview of the rules and regulations concerning window tinting in New York both for homes and vehicles.

Laws for Vehicle Window Tinting

When it comes to vehicle window tinting in New York there are requirements that must be followed;

Tint Percentage

The Visible Light Transmission (VLT) refers to the amount of light that can pass through your cars windows. In New York the front side windows should allow a minimum of 70% light from outside.

Windshield

Tinting is only permitted on the six inches of the windshield.

Rear Window

If a vehicle has side mirrors any VLT can be used on the window; otherwise the 70% rule applies.

Color Restrictions

Red, yellow and amber window tints are not allowed in New York.

Stickers

It is necessary to have tinting certificates from manufacturers indicating the percentage. Additionally it is recommended to have a sticker, on the driver’s side door jamb as identification of tinting.

Medical Exemptions

In New York individuals who have sensitivity, to light can obtain exemptions allowing them to use darker window tint than what is typically allowed. It is important to carry the documentation in the vehicle at all times.

Regulations for Home Window Tinting

When it comes to residential window tinting in New York the laws are more relaxed. Focus on privacy and energy efficiency considerations;

Privacy Concerns

There are no limits on Visible Light Transmission (VLT) for window tints; however it's worth noting that reflective or mirrored tints that may intrude upon neighbors privacy could potentially be regulated at a local level.

Building Codes and HOA Rules

Homeowners should consult building codes and homeowners associations to understand any restrictions or guidelines regarding window tinting.

Permitting

Some local jurisdictions may require permits prior to installing window tints in homes.

Energy Codes

New York might have energy codes that encourage or even mandate types of tinting films known for their ability to enhance energy efficiency.

Safety Glazing

Window films used in homes should adhere to safety standards ensuring that they do not shatter upon impact which's especially important for sliding doors or areas, with foot traffic.

The laws of New York aim to strike a balance, between maintaining an appearance ensuring privacy and safety and promoting energy conservation. To obtain the up to date and accurate information it is crucial to consult the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles or your local government regarding vehicle regulations. Similarly for guidelines on tinting windows, in properties you should reach out to housing authorities or your HOA.
